Taylor Swift Tops UK’s List of Most Influential in Media

Forget what you thought about Taylor Swift. The 24-year-old singer wields some serious power. Don’t believe us? Maybe you’ll take The Guardian‘s word for it: Swift landed the tenth spot on its list of most influential people in media. The “Blank Space” singer got a nod from the paper for pulling her entire music catalog from Spotify, a big move considering 25% of Spotify users have listened to her music. 

Swift recently performed at Victoria’s Secret’s first runway show in London, further proving the hold the singer has over the hearts of our neighbors across the pond. Swift is the only woman in the top 10 most influential, with Kim Kardashian, Benedict Cumberbatch, Shonda Rhimes, Katie Grand, Alexandra Shulman and Lena Dunham rounding out the list of 100. 

As for Britain’s top three most influential? They all work for American companies. Google CEO Larry Page, Facebook head Mark Zuckerberg and Apple CEO Tim Cook took the first, second and third spots.

Marie Claire Gets Miranda Lambert to Pose Poolside for Its January Cover (Forum Buzz)

We often complain that magazines give us the same recycled cover stars. U.S. Marie Claire, however, has delivered an unexpected choice for its first issue of 2015. Country singer Miranda Lambert poses poolside, photographed by Boe Marion, with Alison Edmond on styling duties. We’re happy to see someone fresh star on a fashion magazine cover, but our forums are not pleased with the result.

Miss Dalloway sure wasn’t pleased as she wrote, “How incredibly ungraceful!” inside the thread the minute the cover surfaced.

“It’s only the January issue, but I think we already have the worst cover of all of 2015. She looks relaxed, yet contorted. Add the cleavage to the mix and that is one sorry cover. Wonder if the contents yield a better photo,” added lavieenrose.

GIVENCHYlover even went so far as to say, “Worst fashion magazine cover ever.”

“That’s the best tagline they could come up with from her interview? How depressing. Also, terrible image and styling,” noted HeatherAnne, disapproving of Marie Claire‘s efforts this month.

Do you notice anything peculiar about the cover shot? Forum member kokobombon sure did: “All I can see is her knee… next to the elbow, looks so freakish.”

“Yikes. This is probably the worst cover I’ve seen from them. Miranda is hardly Shania Twain, don’t understand how she got such a major cover. And what on earth is happening to her lower body? The arm looks the same size as her leg. It reminds me of that Ab Fab episode where Eddie’s shrinking on the plastic surgeon’s bed,” commented Benn98.

“Boobs and freaky-looking bones. In general, why are covers getting worse?” asked tigerrouge.

British Fashion Council Announces This Season’s NEWGEN Winners

Ryan Lo and Ashley Williams — we hope you remember those names because you’re probably going to hear a lot more of them in the future. The British Fashion Council has named the two labels the recipients of its coveted NEWGEN catwalk honor, putting both on the fast track to the forefront of British fashion. The designers will receive a runway sponsorship this season along with 1205 and Marques’Almeida (who won last year as well), and will show their latest wares in February.

Other winners include Sadie Williams and Marta Jakubowski, who received the exhibition sponsorship. Molly Goddard, Claire Barrow, Danielle Romeril and Faustine Steinmetz all shared the presentation sponsorship. Many of these designers won NEWGEN sponsorships last season; Romeril and Steinmetz got one for presentation and Barrow also received one for exhibition. It will definitely be interesting to see how the labels have grown since receiving this support from the BFC.

This crop of NEWGEN designers joins a host of successful past recipients like Alexander McQueen, Mary Katrantzou, Christopher Kane and Simone Rocha. Keep your eyes peeled for what this new class does next.

Nicole Kidman’s Brand New ELLE Cover Pretty Much Sucks (Forum Buzz)

The American edition of ELLE is kicking off 2015 by tapping Nicole Kidman as its January cover subject. Photographed by Paola Kudacki (who also shot Rihanna for the December cover), the Academy Award-winning actress shows off an outfit from Christian Dior and poses with her hands inside the pockets of the floor-length jacket for the underwhelming cover. Our forum members claim the Aussie actress looks “outrageously bad” and are left completely unimpressed with the results of the shoot.

“It is so bland it is not even funny OMG it looks atrocious, lifeless. The styling is so so so wrong and the pose and her face do not help whatsoever,” wrote Bertrando3 within minutes of the cover surfacing on the forums.

“OMG, OMG her face looks so bad and the styling is hideous,” agreed GIVENCHYlover.

Also left rather stunned was Benn98: “I struggle to associate Nicole Kidman with ELLE. She’s more, distinguished. None of her past covers for them stand out. OK, perhaps the one she did during The Others‘ promotion, think it was January as well. Even as a preview this cover is bad! How on earth do you get such an underwhelming shot of Nicole? And change that bloody grey backdrop.” 

MON shared the same sentiments and added, “What on earth is happening to ELLE… their covers are super uninspired… this is just beyond awful. The styling, the pose… Nicole looks beautiful but the aura is just dead.”

“Outrageously bad. Fire whoever is responsible for this…” proclaimed HeatherAnne.

A Polished Lorde Talks Fashion and Red Carpet Anxiety as Stella Magazine’s December Cover Girl

Lorde’s budding friendships with the fashion-savvy pack, including Taylor Swift and Karlie Kloss, aren’t having too much of an influence on the teenage singer’s own concern with fashion. Or, at least, that’s what we gather from her latest interview with The Sunday Telegraph‘s Stella magazine.


Lorde, or Ella Yelich-O’Connor, as her mum calls her, is the glossy’s December cover girl, and although she looks freakin’ amazing in a white turtleneck tucked into navy-silk trousers, complete with unrecognisable straightened hair, the starlet hints at how unfazed she is with designer brands, the surprising places she sources clothing, and the stress of walking a red carpet for her accompanying interview.

From the get-go Lorde was asked what she was wearing, and replied with a wonderfully vague piss-taking answer. “Some, like, trousers, some boots… My jumper? I think it’s from New Zealand.” Savvy as she is, she probably guessed the magazine was after some designer names, adding, “I cut the labels out of everything – they scratch me.” (more…)
