The biggest trend this season by a landslide has been ballooning shoulders – something Maison Martin Margiela (along with Peter Dundas at Balmain) helped pioneer – little surprise, therefore, that the designer’s Paris boutiques have seen significant recent sale increases (rumored at over 20 percent).
Unfortunately, this season’s collection lacked the fashion forward intellectual punch that we’ve come to expect. It may have to do with the fact that the mysteriously reclusive designer is said to be increasingly less involved in the house’s collections. For the most part, the collection seemed to be more focused on allusions from the past than something fresh.
As expected, angular ballooned shoulders, cut-outs (another signature and trend this season), and faux nakedness were all there, but the focus was more on creating visual effects (the collection was inspired by flights of stairs – hence a zigzag catwalk with steps, and the angular cut-outs), rather than putting forth a strong view point.
