When Gwyneth Paltrow showed up at the Emmy’s last week in a midriff-bearing look by Emilio Pucci, critics were very vocal about their unease surrounding the bared skin. Should women of her age be wearing such youthful and moderately revealing dresses? If Peter Dundas has his way, we’d better get used to it. No one goes into a Pucci show expecting something girlish and demure, but this season Dundas pulled out an especially outrageous collection. The craftsmanship was outstanding, and there were a few well cut blazers for those hungry for Dundas’ reserved side, but on the whole the collection was filled with sexed-up gypsies and a few print swathed Lolitas.Standout pieces included a set of perfectly fit, floor-length skirts that when paired with something a little less daring – no lace-front crop-tops, I beg you – could be a great choice for a cool spring evening. There were a couple of more reserved cocktail dresses that are sure to make an appearance on the red carpet come awards season but by and large this collection was somewhere between a revival of Dundas’ past work and a natural progression from last season. It would be nice to see the designer show something more modern and woman-friendly in the future, in the mean time, fans of the brand better start hitting the gym now in preparation for next spring.
