UGG Australia presented their Fall/Winter 2009 collection during Berlin Fashion Week on Friday, January 30th. It has been years now that UGG boots made their way stateside and still the line remains popular as evidenced by the long waits in front of the New York City boutiques – even as the economy flounders. However, few know that the Australian brand has extended their footwear line to include accessories, handbags and clothing. Even fewer know that they showed during Fashion Week.
UGG did put on a show however and the dominating theme was, fittingly, comfort, with most looks looking like they would be appropriate for a limited number of places outside of fire-side ones.
There were some warm winter looks making for a range of outdoor styles in addition to comfortable fashions. There was also an extended range for men and kids and – of course— an emphasis on UGG boots and slippers. There were some shoes with heels in an attempt to create somewhat of a fashion over comfort line. Of note were the wedge-heel styles such as “Gissella”, “Seline” and “Corinth” which attempted to blend style with excellent wear properties, thanks to ultra-soft lambskin. However most of UGG Australia’s attempts to go for fashionable looks fell flat with the overly decorative laces and frills.
The brand does its best work when it sticks to utilitarian looks and this season they used eVENT technology. The technology is intended to make shoes water-proof while allowing your feet to breathe so your feet stay warm and dry even under extreme weather conditions.
Of course UGG didn’t abandon their “Classic” style, but it has been extended to include some new styles and many colors. “Bailey Button” fastens with a wooden button at the side. The knitted styles also feature many new versions: the coarse and fine-gauge knit styles have cable stitching, stripes and knitted appliqués. As for the slipper collection there are new styles as well — silhouettes are varied ranging from mules and ballerinas to moccasins with a choice of soles. Finally mittens, caps, earmuffs and scarves lined with sheepskin were all added this season.
