Valentino Delivers a Fairytale Haute Couture Collection for Spring 2014

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli's haute couture pieces have often veered on the dated and clergical side since they took over design duties at Valentino, especially given the drab color palette the designers seem to favor. Not so with their Spring 2014 showing. While the collection's color range did stick to rather somber hues, it was rife with beautiful and undeniably modern pieces, which were inspired by nature. Fittingly, the collection was shown amidst a set that included flowers, butterflies and cloudy skies. Nearly every piece was heavily detailed and even when the looks could have easily seemed costumey — as with a gray coat with a cartoonish lion face on it — they never did thanks to sophisticated silhouettes and spot-on fabric choices. Better yet, there was a lightness even to the most heavily embellished evening looks given the abundance of sheer and/or fluid fabrics.

Impressively, the collection appeared to successfully target a wide age demographic. From flouncy mini fairy-like dresses to long and demure fringe-accented gowns, there was plenty for women of all ages to love.
