Kate Moss rarely gives interviews, which in this day and age of self-promotion and widespread social media is somewhat of an anomaly, especially for a woman considered to be one of the world’s most recognizable supermodels. Kate is said to be “awkward” on camera, which may partly explain her reluctance to give interviews, though friends who know her personally have said she “never shuts up” in private. Here’s a look at 10 other things you may not have known about the British supermodel.

  1. Kate was discovered at JFK airport at the age of 14 by Storm model scout Sarah Doukas.
  2. In September 2008, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris announced a forthcoming exhibit celebrating Kate’s career. It was later canceled for monetary reasons.
  3. Despite her numerous collections for Topshop, she doesn’t consider herself a designer, telling Harper’s Bazaar, “I’m not really a fashion designer. I just love clothes. I’ve never been to design school. I can’t sketch. I can’t cut patterns and things. I can shorten things. I can make a dress out of a scarf.”
  4. The model allegedly took a bath in a champagne-filled tub with Johnny Depp when they were both staying at The Portobello Hotel in London.
  5. While the jam line she was rumored to be starting never game to fruition, Kate does indeed make her own jam. “I love my jam. I’ve just had a batch of it come through, I’ve been making it,” she told the Telegraph.
  6. The supermodel drinks up to 15 cups of tea a day.
  7. She threw John Galliano a surprise birthday party in 2010. “Anyway, Kate and my friend Francesca [Cutler] arranged it, a surprise. We went to the new bar that just opened at the Savoy. It’s very Deco, very beautiful. I arrive and there were fantastic creatures there that I hadn’t seen for like twenty years, the London posse. And then they introduce the acts. David Bowie had come over to perform for me followed by Diana Ross followed by Tina Turner and then Barbra Streisand,” Galliano recounted to WWD.
  8. Kate advised her 16-year-old sister to leave school to pursue her modeling career.
  9. Wondering why Kate rarely gives interviews? “When I used to do interviews a long time ago, I used to get very ill just worrying about them before they came out. I just didn’t like it. When I first started out I did press because I wasn’t really aware that they would write something really horrible but then they did, and I was like: ‘Oh no, I don’t want to go back there. I don’t really want to open up myself to that kind of criticism.’ And I think that a lot of the time you walk in a room they already know what they want to write about you, so it doesn’t matter what you’re like. But sometimes I will do it if I like the person or the project,” she explained.
  10. Even a supermodel has insecurities. Kate claims she never wears mid-calf clothing because she has “bow legs.”
