On October 21 of last year, an Instagram photo of catapulted a college girl into stardom. Taken at a college festival, the photo had over 22,000 likes and helped launch Anok Yai’s career. A few days later, she signed with Next model management.
“Honestly, I think that people get so used to seeing themselves that people don’t see their own beauty because they see it everyday (sic),” Anok told The Independent.
An accidental Instagram sensation, Anok made fashion history after she opened Prada’s Fall 2018 collection. She’s the second black model to accomplish such a feat, following in the footsteps of industry icon Naomi Campbell. “It was an honour and I’m proud that I was the one chosen to open, but this is bigger than me. Me opening for one of the top fashion houses is a statement to the world — especially for black women — that their beauty is something that deserves to be celebrated,” she told British Vogue.
In July, Estée Lauder announced the Sudanese model as its latest brand ambassador. “With the addition of Anok to our current lineup of diverse spokesmodels, we continue the brand’s legacy of celebrating women from different backgrounds, ethnicities and ages,” Estée Lauder’s Global Brand President Stéphane de la Faverie said.
With fashion week just a few weeks away, we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
