American Icon: Debbie Harry (Urban Practicality)

She moves like she don't care, Smooth as silk, cool as air…
-Maria by Blondie

Blondie frontwoman, Debbie Harry, is the quintessential American icon, paving the punk rock style road for millions of style-conscious women who would follow in her path. She exudes a downtown "cool as air" vibe, confident in making a style statement and definitely not afraid of a little color. She’s urban, she’s practical, she’s inspiring and she’s a badass.

Blondie came to fame in the 80s, a time when fashion was bold and bigger was always better. Channeling my inner Debbie Harry, this Embellished Graphic-Print Tee from INC International Concepts, only at Macy's is a sartorial throwback with a modern, embellished twist. The scoop neckline keeps the look casual and the fabric is insanely soft. I'm really into monochromatic ensembles lately, so pairing this tee with white denim skinnies feels super fresh for spring. A classic tee-and-jeans combo is my go-to outfit on busy days and this combo keeps things casual yet creative. Crisp white denim paired with a slouchy soft tee will basically be my uniform for spring.

For daytime appointments and weekend brunches with friends, a flat sandal is a must. Like Debbie, I'm privy to a pop of a color, especially when the rest of my outfit remains neutral. Enter these Mistye2 Flat Sandals in red, which I can slip on quickly for everyday errands around the city as well as pack easily in a suitcase for summer holidays. When day turns to night, Debbie never shied away from a killer heel, which is why I instantly fell in love with these indigo Remmie 3-Piece Booties. In winter, I seem to gravitate towards black, black and more black, but playing with color (especially when it comes to footwear) feels more fun, fresh and accessible for spring.

Now to the bling. Personally, I tend to go light on jewelry in warmer months — NYC can feel like an oven come August! This Multi-Chain Knot Y Necklace provides just the right amount of shine and the cool silver feels comfortable all day long. A signature leather jacket is ubiquitous with the punk rock era, but the fabric is way too heavy this time of year. This Drape-Front Jacket gives a nod to that classic silhouette with a much lighter feel. I'd throw this over tanks, tees, maxi dresses, you name it — a major seasonal staple I'm so stoked to wear ASAP.

Now where can a girl find a good punk rock show in this city??
