I spent the morning at Skylight Studios on Hudson Street, watching the live 3D simulcast from London of the Burberry Prorsum A/W2010 show. Male models dressed in black with huge Burberry umbrellas waited at the door for everyone’s comfort. Inside, after checking in, the fashionable crowd were offered silver platters of lovely little boxes of black 3-D glasses.
Glasses of mimosas, champagne, white cranberry juice, and water were circulated, as were deliciously tiny hor d’oervres. My favorite was the tiny smoked salmon club, but there were also mini-french toasts and raspberry bruschettas. Attendees incuded Hamish Bowles, Glenda Bailey, Cathy Horyn, Fabien Baron, Steven Kolb, Tom Florio, Poppy de Villeneuve, Chessy Wilson, Carlos Quirarte, Serena Merriman, and Becka Diamond
The viewing room was a series of low leather benches, where we all settled in to watch the show at 11am. Pre-show interviews entertained us as the video host spoke with Kate Hudson, rock band The Kooks, Mary-Kate Olsen, Mario Testino, and Anna Wintour. Ms. Wintour commented that having Burberry return to London Fashion Week’s lineup “ really brings a sense of excitement and starpower to the Week”.
Mr. Testino spoke of his work on the Burberry Prorsum campaign, saying “[Christopher Bailey] is a great communicator. He told me what he feels, I hear what he’s trying to say for the picture, and I put it out there.”
The overall theme of the collection was aviation, with decorative touches, texture, and fabric manipulation. Outerwear was the main focus, with models wearing huge coats lined with sheepskin and banded with leather. Fur had a strong presence in dark chocolate brown and a pale grey. For womenswear, the body conscious clothing was shown with over the knee and thigh-high leather boots. There was also a strappy, sheepskin-lined suede ankle boot that appeared halfway through the presentation. Male models stomped the runway in leather wellies.
The strongest colors were olive, chartreuse, a bright royal blue, mustard, and a few shots of purple. The womenswear line was heavy on skirts, cut close to the body, and in some cases ruched or with luxurious ruffles. Accessories included rich leather baguette bags with stud embellishment in dark chocolate and purple, and cuffs embellished with pyramid studs and round brass circles reminiscent of bullet casings.
This is the first live streaming event for Burberry, and they put it together in only a few short months. Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey explained their motivation by saying “This unprecedented event will enable people to experience the energy and atmosphere of this event from around the world. 3D technology will bring our global audience into the London show space allowing them to see the colours and fabrics, to hear the music and to be a part of that moment when it all finally comes together.”
The show actually happened at 4pm London time at the Chelsea College of Art. In addition to the 11am showing in New York, Burberry Prorsum was streamed at select locations in Tokyo, Paris, Dubai, and Los Angeles (hosted by Tina Brown, editor of The Daily Beast). Burberry worked closely with Sky television on production and 3D technology . The 2D version was available at www.burberry.com, as well as to those with Twitter and Facebook accounts.
