Could this be the end of real fur as fashion? If the last few seasons are any indication, the answer could actually be yes.
The number of designers vowing to go fur-free with their collections has been seemingly snowballing. Most recently, Diane von Furstenberg and Burberry announced plans to stop using real fur, joining the ranks of other power players like Gucci, Versace, Armani, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein.
The recent slew of labels dropping fur would be remarkable on its own, but the change doesn’t appear to stop with high fashion houses. The British Fashion Council (BFC), the organization that puts on London Fashion Week, officially banned animal fur in any of its runway shows and presentations for Spring 2019. And the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously this fall for a ban on the sale of all fur products, a policy that will take effect two years from the day it is signed into law.
Certainly, these moves seem to be signaling a major shift that could have widespread ripple effects for fashion as a whole. What was once considered the epitome of glamour is now looked upon by many as cruel — and unnecessary. There is, in fact, an abundance of fashionable fakes out there right now.
